This week in GRS 290/390/490 alumni now located in India, Tanzania, Rwanda, Guatemala, and Seattle video-conferenced in to class to discuss their experiences in the program and how it helped them to develop a career.
“Speakers that cannot come [to UBC] to be guest lecturers, it saves them a lot of time and travel! We also have so many different conferences that do video now. There is going to be one in Montreal and the keynote speaker worked a lot in Africa in health issues. We can only send maybe one student! But that’s another way [to get students involved]. If McGill broadcasts their conference it would be amazing!” – Roxana Quinde, GRS Coordinator.
The LFS Learning Centre has various tools to make high quality audio and video conferencing accessible and easy to use for instructors and students. Blue Jeans is a versatile video conferencing service that connects our high quality LifeSize video conferencing equipment with other platforms (Skype, web browsers, iOS, Android, and other video conferencing services). This means that, regardless of other users’ equipment, we can find a connection.
Faculty members in LFS have used this service to give guest lectures, connecting students with alumni working out of Vancouver, collaborating with community partners, and saving time and money by not having to travel.
The LifeSize video conferencing systems are available in the MacMillan and FNH buildings, and under special circumstances can be brought off-site.
