LFS ‘Loan a Laptop’ Program

The UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems presents the ‘Loan a Laptop’ Program for LFS students, faculty and staff members. This program is brought to you by the TLEF block funding and administered by the LFS Learning Centre. 

This program is set up to ensure accessibility to laptop equipment for learning and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic.   

Apps installed on laptop:  MS Office 2019 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Firefox and Chrome web browsers, Cisco VPN/Umbrella client, Zoom, MS Teams, Camtasia, Snagit, Cisco AMP, VLC media player.  

Role Eligibility: 

  • Undergraduates student registered in an LFS degree program 
  • Undergraduate students registered in an LFS course  
  • Graduate students in an LFS Professional Master’s Program or registered for courses 
  • TAs teaching LFS courses 
  • LFS instructors teaching an LFS course for the current term 

Case Eligibility: 

  • Personal computer equipment does not have a working camera, microphone, or speaker not meeting the requirements for learning in the instructor’s course.  
  • Personal computer equipment cannot connect reliably to the internet. 
  • Personal computer equipment no longer operational and student is unable to get a replacement immediately due to financial reasons 
  • Personal computer requires repairs. 

Laptop Loan Duration: 

Depending on the case, eligible users may borrow a laptop,  

  • Until completion of their LFS course work including exam(s) for the current course term. 
  • For the duration when their personal computer is being repaired. 
  • If no devices are available, a waitlist will be created based on first-come-first-serve policy. 

What do you need? 

  • A valid student/faculty/staff card. 
  • A valid CWL ID. 
  • A UBC email ID to loan out using our forms. 

Process for Students and TAs: 

  • You should inform the instructor of the LFS course you are registered in; they will contact the LFS Learning Centre and request a laptop on your behalf.    

Process for Instructors: 

  • LFS instructor contacts the Learning Centre and request a laptop for virtual teaching and learning. 

Pick Up Instructions: 

  • After arranging a pickup date and time, the user is informed of the pandemic procedures for entering the Macmillan building. The pandemic procedures must be adhered to when visiting MCML 266. 
  • User will be required to login using their CWL and password to create a user profile on the laptop.  Instructions will be provided on how to use the laptop. 
  • User profiles on the laptops are unique to the user and cannot be accessed by other users. 
  • The LFS Learning Centre recommends all data be stored on OneDrive as the laptop may not be available for accessing the data stored locally after the end of the loan period. 

Rules: 

  • Personal data stored on the laptop is the responsibility of the users. The Learning Centre will not be held responsible for any loss of data from the device. 
  • A valid CWL is required for the laptop to be loaned out. 
  • In case of default in returning the laptop by the deadline, users need to contact the Learning Centre directly at it@landfood.ubc.ca and explain the circumstances. Failure to do so may result in a fine payment and/or curtailed privileges in the laptop loan program. 
  • Theft of laptop during a loan is the responsibility of the loaner.
