How to Record In-person Lectures
Lecture recording allows students to keep up with the course remotely when they are unwell or unable to attend the class due to reasons beyond their control. Students have also expressed a strong preference in lecture recording as an effective learning tool as it allows students to review lectures, pause, rewind, and revisit particularly challenging sections of the course.
The Learning Centre conducted focus groups in June, 2021 to ask students about their experience of remote learning what students want moving forward. The findings of these focus groups have been compiled on our website here: https://lc.landfood.ubc.ca/students-reflections-on-remote-learning/
BEFORE COMING TO CLASS
In Canvas
- Enable the Canvas Zoom Integration in your course settings
(To automatically synchronize Zoom meeting and recordings with your Canvas course)- Open your Canvas course
- Find the Zoom plug-in in the navigation bar on the left. If you cannot locate it, click on Settings
- Find the Zoom plug-in in the disabled plug-ins list. Click on the 3 dots next to Zoom and select “Enable”
- Zoom should show up in the plug-in list. Drag and drop the Zoom plug-in in the list where you want it to be.
- Click on “Save” to save your settings. Zoom should now show up in the navigation bar where you set it to be.
- Open your Canvas course
- Create the Zoom Meeting and Activate ‘Record the meeting Automatically‘
- Name the meeting
- Set the meeting to recurring. You can select to set it up to recur weekly and select the days and time of your class
- Ensure ‘waiting room’ is enabled
- Ensure Host and Participant video is set to ‘off’
- Check the “Record the meeting automatically” checkbox, then select “in the cloud”.
- Click on ‘Save’ to save the meeting with these settings
- Name the meeting
In Person
- View the classroom setup
(To know and test exactly what you need) - Prepare a recording device such as laptop
- Collect a wireless microphone
(Can be borrowed from the Learning Centre for the semester: email your request to it@landfood.ubc.ca)
Ensure you are carrying spare batteries for your lavalier mic
SETUP BEFORE THE LECTURE
- Open Recording Device (such as laptop)
- Switch on the projector via the control box.
- Connect the HDMI (or VGA) cable to your laptop. If you need to use an adapter, connect the HDMI cable to the adapter first, then connect it to your laptop.
- Select HDMI (or VGA) on the control box.
- Take the lavalier mic cables and switch it on (Ensure the LED is not flashing. That indicates low battery). Connect the mic receiver to the laptop.
- Pin the mic on your clothing close to your mouth.
- (Optional) Connect the clicker (slide advancer) to the laptop. Switch it on and test it at this point.
- Go to your Canvas course page and select the Zoom plugin. Start the Zoom meeting that you set up earlier. The meeting should automatically start recording
- On the Zoom app, test your audio to ensure your mic is connected and functioning well. Share your slides and ensure it shows up on the projector screen.
- You can start teaching in class and walk around with the lavalier mic connected. The recording will capture your audio and slides.
Note: Students will be able to join the lecture synchronously as the Zoom link will be visible in the Canvas-Zoom Integration. You can restrict access by enabling the Zoom waiting room.
AFTER THE LECTURE
- Switch off your Zoom recording and end the meeting.
- Disconnect the USB receiver and pack the lavalier mic system.
- Disconnect the clicker
- Disconnect the HDMI cables.
- Power off the projector using the control box.
- Publish the lecture recording in the Canvas-Zoom Integration or sharing it via your Canvas course.
Note: You can keep the lecture recording private by not publishing/sharing the recording.
KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT

COMPUTER
You will need a device in order to connect to the class projector and record the lecture. A basic laptop will be able to satisfy all of your needs.
In order to connect to the projector system, you will need either a VGA or HDMI port. If you do not have the proper port then you will need an adapter. Common adapters go from Apples’ thunderbolt to HDMI or USB-C to HDMI. Most tech stores will carry the adapter you need.

PROJECTOR

LAVALIER MIC
A lavalier mic is a clip-on microphone that has minimal impact on movement or aesthetics. The receiver must be plugged into the recording computer via USB, while the microphone component is clipped onto your shirt, near your mouth, with the battery pack in a pocket.
It is important to ensure that the device has sufficient power. If the indicator LED is flashing, instead of solid, then the battery is close to empty and must be changed. If you notice the flashing at the beginning of class, change the battery before beginning.
We recommend a quick test at the beginning of every lecture to ensure the device is working properly and sounds good.
If you need a microphone, you may be able to borrow it from the Learning Centre for the term. Reach us at it@landfood.ubc.ca
